Most Repeaters Are Quiet. Ours Usually Aren't.

Southern Nevada has no shortage of amateur radio repeaters. What is harder to find is a repeater where people are actually talking.

We are not going to pretend Sin City repeaters are busy every minute of every day. They are not.

But compared with the silence that defines many repeater frequencies, ours are remarkably active. Conversations happen in the morning, throughout the day, during the evening commute, and often well into the night.

Sometimes you will turn on the radio and hear nothing. Then somebody throws out a call sign, another operator answers, and twenty minutes later there is a full conversation underway.

Our repeaters are not just maintained. They are used.

Sin City exists because we want to do amateur radio.

We are not a Tuesday morning breakfast club with radios on the side. We are an operating club where friendships grow out of getting on the air, working on projects, learning from each other, and doing things together.

Members build and maintain repeater systems, work HF, chase DX, experiment with digital modes, participate in contests and special event stations, troubleshoot equipment, and teach.

The social side matters too. Meals, outings, family activities, barbecues, and informal gatherings have been part of Sin City from the beginning.

The difference is simple:

Las Vegas and Southern Nevada Ham Radio Repeaters

Sin City supports amateur radio repeater infrastructure serving Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Indian Springs, Boulder City, Pahrump, Clark County, Nye County, and Southern Nevada.

Our affiliated systems operate across 2 meters, 70 centimeters, and 33 centimeters.

The network includes commercial-grade repeater equipment, linked systems, high-rise installations, and mountain-top infrastructure at Angel Peak, Low Potosi, and Blue Diamond.

Sin City's connected infrastructure also includes AllStar Hub 42230 and AllStar Hub 47366, extending communication beyond the RF footprint of any individual repeater.

Some members simply want reliable repeaters to use. Others want to understand how they work.

How do duplexers work? What causes desense? How are repeaters linked? How does AllStar work? What changes when equipment is installed on a mountain instead of a Las Vegas high-rise?

If those questions interest you, there is plenty to learn.

More Than Repeaters

Do not let the name fool you.

Sin City members participate throughout amateur radio, including HF, DX, SSB, CW, FT8, FT4, digital modes, Parks on the Air, portable operating, special event stations, technical experimentation, and amateur radio contesting.

Sin City Repeater Group is also Southern Nevada's only ARRL-recognized contest club and one of only two ARRL-recognized contest clubs in Nevada.

You do not need a tower, kilowatt, contest station, or years of experience to participate. Make contacts. Learn. Improve. Try another mode. Contribute your score.

An experienced contester chasing a personal best and somebody making their first contest QSO can work toward the same objective.

Special Event Stations and Operating Activities

Sin City creates reasons for members to get on the air.

Our K7F special event operations have connected Southern Nevada operators with stations across the United States and around the world.

They also reflect an important part of our philosophy: amateur radio participation should work around real life.

Members have careers, families, businesses, travel, and responsibilities outside the hobby. Special event stations, contests, digital operating, technical projects, and online activities give people different ways to contribute.

You might not be available for a Saturday morning event. You might still put 100 contacts in the club log Tuesday night.

That counts.

New Ham? We Start Before the Net.

Passing an FCC examination does not automatically mean someone owns a radio, knows which radio to buy, knows how to program it, understands PL tones and repeater offsets, or knows how to conduct themselves on the air.

That is why Sin City does not begin with a New Ham Net.

A New Ham Net already assumes the new operator owns a radio, has programmed it correctly, can access the repeater, understands basic etiquette, and is comfortable pressing the microphone button.

We would rather start earlier.

Sin City offers New Ham Orientation sessions online through Zoom, covering questions such as:

• What radio should I buy?
• How do I program it correctly?
• What is a PL tone or repeater offset?
• Why can I hear the repeater but cannot get into it?
• How do I make my first call?
• How do I join a conversation?
• What is considered good repeater etiquette?
• What happens if I make a mistake?

Nobody comes out of a license examination knowing everything.

We want new hams to become comfortable enough to actually use their license.

Experienced Ham? Bring What You Know.

If you understand RF, repeater systems, commercial radio equipment, antennas, Linux, networking, AllStar, electronics, microwave, HF, DX, contesting, digital modes, emergency communications, or technical infrastructure, there is plenty to do.

Sin City does not expect every idea to come from club officers.

If you think we should do something, propose it. If it makes sense, help build it. Teach something. Develop an operating event. Experiment with another mode. Help improve infrastructure.

Sin City is rooted in Southern Nevada, but amateur radio has never been limited by geography.

We have developed a special working relationship with the Buffalo Amateur Radio Repeater Association, Inc. (BARRA) in Western New York.

Sin City founder Bill, N4NJJ, is originally from Buffalo, and those relationships have grown into an ongoing connection between operators and technical communities more than 2,000 miles apart.

We exchange ideas, technical experience, and knowledge. Technologies such as AllStar make those connections easier, but the technology is not really the point.

The people are.

Built Differently

The Sin City Repeater Group, Inc. is a Nevada nonprofit educational corporation, an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) organization, an ARRL-affiliated amateur radio club, and an ARRL-recognized contest club.

Our philosophy is straightforward:

Membership gets you involved. Contribution earns influence.

Operating matters. Teaching matters. Technical work matters. Supporting activities matters. Helping with infrastructure matters. Taking ownership matters.

You do not need to own a repeater, have an engineering degree, or operate a $20,000 station.

What matters is participation.

Sin City welcomes licensed amateur radio operators age 18 and older interested in an active amateur radio organization serving Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Indian Springs, Boulder City, Pahrump, Clark County, Nye County, and Southern Nevada.

Membership is selective and subject to review under the Sin City Repeater Group Constitution and Bylaws.

Current membership categories include:

• Standard Membership: $75 per year
• Senior Membership: $50 per year
• Veteran Membership: $40 per year
• Non-Resident Associate Membership: No annual dues for qualifying operators outside Clark County

Sin City operates a closed, controlled-access repeater network. Membership and repeater authorization are separate, and membership does not automatically provide access to every Sin City-affiliated repeater.
